Patricia Ann (Fischer) Arps was born February 13, 1926, in Woodbine, Iowa to Arthur and Mary (Link) Fischer. Pat grew up in the Woodbine and Magnolia areas. She attended Magnolia #8 country school and graduated from the Woodbine High School in 1943. She then taught school for one year. On June 5, 1944, she married Lowell Arps at the Presbyterian Church in Woodbine. The couple moved to Virginia for a while. They returned to the Woodbine area and Pat taught school at the Warman Country School west of Woodbine. She then taught 5th and 6th grade in Persia, Iowa for one year. The couple lived in Ames, Iowa from 1949 - 1953 while Lowell was getting his degree. Then they moved to Lamoni, Iowa for two years; Logan, Iowa for five years; Emmetsburg, Iowa for one year and finally to Woodbine. Pat was a substitute teacher and held several longtime substitute positions when the area schools needed someone.
Pat was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, P.E.O., and a neighborhood club. She was a past member of the Eastern Star, and past president of Jennie Edmundson Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered at Jennie Ed for 30 years, and she received the volunteer of the year award in 1976.
Pat died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa attaining the age of 78 years, three months, and 10 days.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents; two sons Keith Layne Arps on March 30,2001, and Lloyd Arthur Arps on February 24, 1994. She is survived by her husband Lowell of nearly 60 years; daughter Mary Jo and her husband Dick Bonsall of Dunlap, Iowa; two daughters-in-law Jean Arps of Cordova, Tennessee and Sue Durfee of Council Bluffs, Iowa; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
