Paul LaVerne Hartwig was born December 19, 1921, in Dunlap, Iowa to Julius and Ethel (Pedersen) Hartwig. He was raised in Dunlap and graduated from high school in 1941. Paul worked for a time before proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He was trained to be an airplane mechanic and served most of his overseas tour in India. He was honorably discharge on February 2, 1946. Paul married Helen Turner June 5, 1949. Paul worked for different implement dealerships in Dunlap and Denison before starting his own mechanic business. After retirement Paul and Helen enjoyed taking elderly friends and neighbors to various doctor appointments.

Paul loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed hunting, gardening, and working on tractors, radios and televisions. He was known to be able to fix anything.

Paul died Sunday, November 21, 2010, at his son's home in Dunlap at the age of 88 years, 11 months, and two days.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ruby Pester. He is survived by his wife, Helen Hartwig of Dunlap, Iowa; daughter, Jane and Dan Burroughs of Ute, Iowa; son, Robert and Ellie Hartwig of Dunlap, Iowa; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
