Philip Edwin McCann was born on July 20, 1919, in Dunlap, Iowa to parents Edmond R. & Ethel F. (Howe) McCann. He grew up in the Dunlap area and attended St. Joseph Catholic School and the Dunlap High School. He served in the US Coast Guard during World War II. On June 10, 1955, he married Eva Lawson in Franklin, Nebraska. The couple lived in Omaha before moving to Dunlap, Iowa to begin their farming operation in 1959.
Phil was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap. The couple loved to travel to Texas and then Florida for the winters.
Phil died on Saturday, February 21, 2009, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home attaining the age of 89 years, seven months, and one day.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eva McCann on March 11, 2005; and two sisters, Patricia Werthman and Madona Eastwood. He is survived by his son, Vince McCann and his wife Kathy of Montrose, Colorado; his brothers, David F. McCann of Council Bluffs, Iowa and James H. McCann of Omaha, Nebraska; special nephew, Kirk Lawson and his wife Margaret of Omaha, Nebraska several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
