Robert Elsworth Bonar was born August 27, 1924, to James and Mildred (Fitzgerald) Bonar in Dunlap, Iowa. He was raised in Dunlap and graduated from Dunlap High School in 1942. Bob proudly served his county in the U.S. Army from April 1943 to December 1945. Bob married Frances Samuelson in February of 1946. The couple farmed in the Charter Oak area and Bob also did bridge construction. They moved to Spencer, Iowa and operated a gas station. They moved to Council Bluffs where Bob drove a truck for Dilts Trucking. Frances died in 1976. Bob married Thelma Lantz Samuelson at the Methodist Church in Dow City on March 9, 1978. Bob continued to drive a semi for another 26 years. The last five years Thelma drove with him.
Bob was a member of the Dow City Methodist Church and the Dow City American Legion Post #444. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and traveling.
Bob died on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa attaining the age of 83 years, four months, and 12 days.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Frances; son, David; daughter, Cheryl Walton; grandson, Michael Walton; sister, Lois; and sister-in-law, Viola Bonar. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Bonar of Dow City, Iowa three children, Rob Bonar of Phoenix, Arizona, Nancy Smith of San Diego, California, Douglas (Barbara) Bonar of San Diego, California, three stepchildren, Kenneth (Vera) Samuelson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jane (Mark) Crampton of Vail, Iowa, Keith (Kelly) Samuelson of Mapleton, Iowa; son-in-law, Darrel Walton of Everly, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; three brothers, Richard Bonar of Council Bluffs, Iowa, William (Vernelle) Bonar of Treynor, Iowa, Raymond (Ann) Bonar of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
