Ruth Boe

Ruth Ava (Shumate) Boe was born July 21, 1916, to Daniel and Lola (Smith) Shumate near Dow City, Iowa. Ruth was raised in the Dow City and Dunlap area. She attended school in Dunlap where she graduated as the valedictorian of her class. Upon graduation, Ruth attended a business college. She then returned to Dunlap and worked for Tom Ryder's Furniture store. When Mr. Ryder retired, Ruth purchased the furniture store and operated it as well as a bottled gas delivery company. Ruth married Lawrence Boe in 1955. She continued to operate the furniture store until she sold it in the 1960's and joined Lawrence farming fulltime. The couple then farmed for many years west of Dunlap until they retired in the early 80's and moved into town. In 1981, Ruth started doing bookkeeping for Jack Hawn's oil company. She retired from Hawn Oil in 1993.
Ruth was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dunlap. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, and knitting. She also enjoyed being involved in all her great nieces and nephews activities.
Ruth died on June 15, 2009, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 92 years, ten months, and 25 days.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence in April of 1986; two brothers, Dan and Ralph Shumate; nephew, Randy Shumate; great nephew Mark McCurdy, and sister-in-law, Wilma Shumate. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Velma Rodman of Pella, Iowa; Irene Cleveland of Woodbine, Iowa; Enid Brown of Escondido, California; three nieces, Charlotte and Joe McCurdy of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Marty and Steve Hooten of West Des Moines, Iowa; Deb McKinley of Roland, Iowa; one nephew, Rick and Michelle Shumate of Avoca, Iowa, and many other relatives and friends.
