Shirley Wakehouse

Shirley Jean (McHugh) Wakehouse was born on January 3, 1948 in Pisgah, Iowa to Dale and Edith (Tietsort) McHugh. She was raised in Pisgah and attended school there until her family moved to Woodbine in 1964. She graduated from Woodbine High School in 1966. In November of 1966, Shirley married Dennis Wakehouse. The couple moved to Omaha and Shirley went to work at Mutual of Omaha. For a short time, they moved to Dennis’s grandparents farm outside of Pisgah, then resided in Logan before settling in Woodbine. Shirley was busy being a wife and mom, but also went to work at Warner Implement in Woodbine from 1978 to 1996 and was a rural mail carrier for a time.

Shirley and Dennis enjoyed many activities together including horseback riding, snowmobiling, attending rodeos and going to the casino. She enjoyed helping with her grandchildren and made quilts for each of them. Shirley liked being able to attend the grandchildren’s sporting events and spent a lot of time taking care of her iris flower beds. She also loved to travel and made sure that Elvis was always playing while they did.

Shirley died at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Monday, November 9, 2020 at the age of 72 years, 10 months and six days.

Shirley was preceded by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Warren McHugh; and sister, Charlotte Dugdale. Survived by her husband, Dennis Wakehouse of Woodbine; three children, Lori Wakehouse of Moorhead, Iowa, David Wakehouse and his wife Jen of Tekamah, Nebraska and Robert Wakehouse and his wife Tara of Woodbine, Iowa; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sister, Irene Kuhlman of Woodbine; sister-in-law, Kathy McHugh of Woodbine; and many other relatives and friends.
