Susan Janette Esser was born on February 12, 1966, in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Robert and Delores (Cornelison) Frieze. She grew up in Council Bluffs and her family moved to Persia, Iowa when she was 10. She attended school at Tri-Center and graduated in the Class of 1984. After graduation, Susan went to work at World Insurance in Omaha, Nebraska. On August 22, 1992, Susan was united in marriage to Dean Esser in Portsmouth, Iowa. They welcomed Josie, Garrett and Justin into their family and she was able to stay home with the kids. Once they started school, she served as a preschool teacher for a number of years. Susan went to work for Hy-Vee in Harlan, first as an assistant manager and then in the bakery area. She then went to work as a CNA and CMA at Elm Crest and the Hansen House, before managing the kitchen at the Hansen House.

Susan loved to read and watch the Cubs and the Rams. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening and her flowers. She was amazing in the kitchen and loved to bake and cook. Most of all, she cherished time with her family, including her great niece and nephew.

Susan died on January 9, 2022, at her home in Portsmouth after a battle with cancer, at the age of 55 years, 10 months and 28 days.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Mark Frieze.
