Thelma M. Ulmer
Thelma was born May 15, 1929 to Henry and Myrtle (McGee) Athey in Woodbine, IA. She attended country school and graduated from Woodbine High School in 1946. She attended the University of Northern Iowa and obtained her teaching certificate. She taught at the one room schoolhouse in Persia and in the Council Bluffs school system. In January of 1949 Thelma married Donavon Charles Grap in Persia, IA. They lived in Persia and Council Bluffs. On May 3, 1977, she married Gene Ulmer in Council Bluffs, IA. Thelma worked as an assistant librarian at Jennie Edmundson Hospital until her retirement in 1989. In 1990 Thelma and Gene moved to Dunlap.
Thelma was a member of the Shepherd of Valley Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs and then St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap. She was also involved with the Legion Auxiliary.
Thelma died September 12, 2002 at the Indian Hills Nursing Home in Council Bluffs, IA attaining the age of 73 years three months and 29 days.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Doris Topolski and Lois Renz and one brother Clifford Athey. She is survived by her husband of 25 years Gene Ulmer of Dunlap, IA, Son Rodney Grap of Glenwood, IA, three daughters Cheryl & Jim Gardner of Waterloo, IA, Gayle Grap of Council Bluffs, IA, Lee Ann & Robert Knecht of Council Bluffs, IA, brother Edward Athey of Omaha, NE, six grand children and eight great-grandchildren.
