Trellis Sammons

Trellis Ann (Jenkins) Sammons was born December 30, 1936, in Winnebago, Minnesota to Otis and Lenora (Hamilton) Jenkins. She grew up and attended school in Bancroft, Iowa. Trellis started working with her mother at a nursing home in Algona, Iowa. At the age of 17, Trellis married George Willis. The couple was blessed with four children. The family lived in various locations before they went to work for the Thomas Show Carnival in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Trellis and George separated in 1975. She then married Roland Sammons in January 15, 1977. The couple lived in Mapleton, Iowa and retired on a farm north of Holstein, Iowa. Roland died in 1980. Trellis moved to Dunlap, Iowa in 2003 and worked at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center until she retired in 2008.

Trellis was a member of Ida Grove American Legion Auxiliary Woman’s Group. She enjoyed crocheting and embroidering afghans and dish towels, going to the casino and playing bingo. She also enjoyed fishing with her grandsons and traveling. Trellis would always get hungry for chocolate chip cookies; she would make a batch and just have one or two cookies and bring the rest of the batch to the grandchildren.

Trellis died on Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 74 years, five months and 27 days.

Trellis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roland; daughter, Rose Marie Willis and son, Cleo Willis; granddaughter, Ashley Willis; and many brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son, Russell (Tina) Willis of Dunlap, IA; daughter, Veta Willis of Ida Grove, IA; eight grandchildren, Amanda Palmer, Laura (Justin) Terry, Victoria (Travis) Smith, Miranda (Ethan) Trucke, Cassandra Willis, Robert Willis, William Willis, Christina Willis; four great grandchildren; six step-daughters; five sisters, Delores McKibbon of Early, IA, Lucille Jenkins of Cedar Rapids, IA, Maxine Iverson of Fort Dodge, IA, Claire (Rosetta) Groves of Winnebago, MN, Joy Burndt of Pillager, MN; and many other relatives and friends.
