Velma Ruth (Harmon) Holben was born August 13, 1929 to Emmett and Minnie Etta (Outhouse) Harmon in Moorhead, Iowa. She was raised in Moorhead and Pisgah, Iowa and graduated from Pisgah High School in 1946. Velma married Charles "Bud" Holben on July 21, 1946, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple lived in Pisgah until 1960. At this time they moved to Storm Lake, Iowa for three years and then returned to Pisgah. Velma sold Avon for many years and she was also the city clerk for Pisgah for several years.

Velma was a member of the Community of Christ and was a priest in the church. She was active in the Ladies Aid, sang for many funerals, was the music director at the Bible school, and the camp fire director at the church reunion camps. Velma loved to sing, but she particularly loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Velma died on Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 79 years, two months, and 29 days.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sons, Randall and Stewart Holben; granddaughter Elizabeth Holben; and one brother Everett Harmon. She is survived by her husband, Charles "Bud" Holben of Woodbine, Iowa; four children, Kristine (Tim) Gregory of Riverton, Wyoming, Steve (Laurie) Holben of Fremont, Nebraska, Rod (Linda) Holben of Pisgah, Iowa, John Holben of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grand-children; two sisters, Virginia (Leroy) Cave of Woodbine, Iowa, Margaret Hamer of Missouri Valley, Iowa; two brothers, Howard (Darlene) Harmon of West Liberty, Iowa, George (Nancy) Harmon of Omaha, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends.
