Velma Joan (Wickersham) Perkins was born on May 7, 1929, to Ralph and Harriet (Harger) Wickersham in Bloomington, Nebraska. The family moved to the Turin, Iowa area where Velma attended Arcola Rural School and then graduated from Castana High School in 1947. Velma married Edward Perkins on September 10, 1948, in Onawa, Iowa. The couple farmed west of Woodbine. Velma worked at Rose Vista Nursing Home as a nurse's aide starting in 1966 and worked there for 26 years. The couple moved into Woodbine in 1998.

Velma was a member of the Allen Thought and Thimble Club and Jolly Clique Club. She liked crocheting, gardening, baking, playing cards and dominoes. She also enjoyed camping at the family campground and at their cabin by Lynch, Nebraska. Another favorite of Velma's was going out to eat and eating ice cream. Velma loved the girls annual trip to Brookings, South Dakota for the Arts & Craft Fair. She also volunteered at the Moorhead Loess Hills Hospitality Center.

Velma died August 30, 2010, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine at the age of 81 years, three months, and 23 days.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by husband of nearly 62 years, Edward Perkins of Woodbine, Iowa; four children, Michael (Carolyn) Perkins of Woodbine, Iowa. Janice (Michael) Kozeny of Papillion, Nebraska, Nancy (John) Thomas of Omaha, Nebraska, Toni (Chris) Oakes of Bellevue, Nebraska; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; two sisters, her twin Thelma (Harvey) Hansen of Onawa and Ruth Crosgrove all of Onawa, Iowa; two brothers, Ralph (Donna) Wickersham, Jr. of Turin, Iowa, Marvin (Dorothy) Wickersham of Essex, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
