Vera Augusta (Barkhoff) Mether, was born on November 9, 1910, to Fred and Maggie (Armstrong) Barkhoff in Logan, Iowa. She attended Liberty Grade School and graduated from Logan High School with a certificate to teach. Vera married Edwin Mether on February 23, 1930, in a double ceremony with her brother Cyril Barkoff and Leeta Miller. The couple farmed in Magnolia, Logan, and Woodbine communities. After many years of helping Edwin with the farm work, she started a new career as a cook at the Woodbine School for many years. Vera was an avid quilter and attended the Senior Center creating many close friends.
Vera was baptized at the Methodist Church in Logan. She was a faithful member of the Woodbine Methodist Church and the morning circle. She looked forward to her outings with the "Sunday Diners."
Vera died on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, at her home attaining the age of 94 years, nine months and one day,
Vera was preceded in death by her parents; husband Edwin, after 55 years of marriage; one infant grandson; one sister, Irene Jens; and three brothers Cyril, Harold and Russell. Survivors include three children, Jean Springer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Harley Mether and his wife Janet of Woodbine, Iowa; Dale Mether of Grand Junction, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Bill Mether and his wife Maxine of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Joy Mether of Magnolia, Iowa, Arleta Barkhoff of Logan, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
