Verna Thompson

Verna Raye (Merritt) Thompson was born November 8, 1935, to Marian and Erma (Nelson) Merritt in Dunlap, Iowa. She was raised in Dunlap and graduated from Dunlap High School. Verna married Avery Junior Thompson on May 3, 1957, in Luverne, Minnesota. The couple lived in Dunlap. Verna was a waitress at the Gold Slipper and she worked in the laundry room at Dunlap Nursing & Rehab Center. Verna retired from the DNRC in 2006. Junior died on May 29, 2011.

Verna died on Sunday, August 17, 2014, at the Myrtue Hospital in Harlan, Iowa at the age of 78 years, nine months, and nine days.

Verna was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dunlap. She enjoyed shopping, crocheting, knitting and painting. She also loved her dogs, Bailey, Lucky and Reno.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Brett; and two brothers, Dick and Bill Merritt. She is survived by two children, Peggy (Rick) Pauley of Earling, Iowa and Clay Thompson of Dunlap, Iowa; three grand-children, Nikki Pauley, Tara Pauley and Nathan Ohl all of Dunlap, Iowa and Derek Pauley of Earling, Iowa; one great granddaughter, Lexi; three sisters-in-law, Cindy Merritt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Darlene Thompson and Lois Thompson both of Dunlap, Iowa; brother-in-law, Jack (Carol) Thompson of Henderson, Nevada and many other relatives and friends.
