Vonda Glee (Ellison) Hammack was born January 2, 1940, to Elmer and Nellie (Flaharty) Ellison in Logan, Iowa. Vonda attended Finland, Sunny Glen, and Allen Creek Country Schools before graduating from Woodbine High School in 1958. Vonda married Dencil Hammack on November 1, 1958, at the First Christian Church in Woodbine. Vonda worked for First National Bank, Pryor Sale Barn in Woodbine and in 1969 she began her career at the Woodbine Community School. She was the secretary for two superintendents, a teacher's aide, the elementary principal's secretary and also a para educator.
Vonda was a member of the First Christian Church and she held many positions at the church including: Church Elder, choir director, Sunday school teacher for 45 years, and CYF sponsor. She also was active with the Youth Center, Women of Woodbine, Notabelles, Jayceettes and was the choir director for the Post Office Convention NAPUS choir. Vonda's life's passion was teaching children. She also loved to take care of family and friends, work in her garden, and mow the lawn.
Vonda died on Sunday, August 3, 2008, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 68 years, seven months, and one day.
Vonda was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Shirley Mae Piglsey; brother, Dale Lyle Ellison; brother-in law, Robert Hull; and grandson, Rory Patrick Geraghty. She is survived by her husband, Dencil Hammack of Woodbine, Iowa; two daughters, Tammy Hammack and her daughter, Grace of Boston, Massachusetts, Kim (Tim) Mattingly and their daughters, Kayla, Meggan, and Kristin of Woodbine, Iowa; AFS daughter, Marion (Bodo) Schulter and their sons, Felix and Florian of Bielefeld, Germany; sisters, DeLoris Hull and LaVonna (Don) Clark all of Woodbine, Iowa; brother-in-law, Delbert Pigsley of Kamrar, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
