Wilbur Romane Moores was born June 25, 1921, to ER "Dick" and Alma E. (Browning) Moores in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. At the age of three the family moved to a farm southeast of Woodbine. Wilbur graduated from Woodbine High School in 1939. Wilbur served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a Chief Electrician and served most of his time in the South Pacific. After his honorable discharge Wilbur was in the earth moving business with his father and brother, Gale. Wilbur married Helen Poe on August 11, 1952, in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple lived in Schleswig for seven years, where Wilbur worked for the phone company. They moved back to Woodbine, where he continued to work for the telephone company, Boyer Valley Telephone Co., Central Iowa Telephone Co and then GTE. Wilbur retired in 1987. Helen died in 2015.
Wilbur was a member of the Woodbine Christian Church. Wilbur enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed reading, playing his banjo and watching birds.
Wilbur died on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 26 days.
Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen Moores; and sister Desi Moores at 18 years of age. He is survived by his three sons, Tim (Yvonne) Moores of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, David (Debbie) Moores of Woodbine, Iowa and Danny (Lyn) Moores of Woodbine, Iowa; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two brothers, Gale (Yvonne) Moores of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Burton (Hattie) Moores of Woodbine, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
